Just a Little Kindness

I kissed Mike on the cheek and left him in the care of nurses, the anesthesiologist and the surgeon who would be removing the infected fluid that was compressing his right lung. For two days, Mike had experienced terrible pain and difficulty breathing. The surgery had been delayed until blood thinners were no longer a danger. The medical staff was competent and confident that the surgery would be a success. I felt at peace and was glad Mike could begin the journey toward health and healing. Nevertheless, the waiting room felt very quiet with only me in it. I looked up as a man walked past. He stopped and said, “My wife works here and I am getting some food for her. Can I get you something?” His thoughtfulness touched me and helped me remember, once again, that people are good. People are kind. It doesn’t take much to reach out and touch the life of a fellow journeyer. We can walk together or, at the very least, notice each other, speak, and reach out with kindness.
