Mile 52

Updated: Jun 26, 2019

For the 3rd year in a row, with the help of an incredible support system, I completed the National Ability Center Summit Challenge. This year we set a new personal record and rode the 52 miles (with an elevation gain of 3000 feet) in 6 hours and 29 minutes. It all started with a goal and a coach to help me reach it.

When We Begin

Just like in all of life's journeys, we began the ride with EXCITEMENT, ENTHUSIASM, and ENERGY. However, after a few hills and bumps in the road we soon remembered this was no joy ride, but a 52 mile physically exhausting journey through Park City's canyons.

"Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it." - Greg Anderson

Jordanelle

At about mile 20, the first taste of what's in store hits. Jordanelle. Jordanelle is an upward 5 mile stretch. Over the 3 years I've learned if I don't get my mind right for Jordanelle, the whole ride will be off. Same goes for daily challenges. It's easy to be coasting along, everything where as it should be. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, we hit a steep uphill. We get thrown from our coasting routine and are forced into difficult situations. But if we can learn to turn fear into encouragement and pain into fighting spirit, I won't promise it'll be easier, but it will be a more positive and beneficial experience.
