Stand Tall & Look Up

When Mike was learning to walk, his physical therapist consistently said two phrases, “stand tall” and “look up.”  Because Mike couldn’t feel his right leg or foot, he would often look down to make sure it was in place before putting his weight to that side. But, when he looked down, everything was thrown off and he would lose balance. When he could focus ahead, keeping his eyes on the goal, his muscles would respond by supporting him and allowing him to walk.

Life is like that. When we look down, we lose focus and balance. When we “stand tall” our bodies are strengthened both physically and emotionally helping us to move forward. Likewise, when we “look up,” we can see beyond the moment that might be filled with trial and despair. We gain perspective and can view the situation from a variety of angles. We can see the eyes and smiles of others who want to cheer us forward.

Today, for this moment, stand tall and look up.

This post is written with deep gratitude for a gifted physical therapist, Shane Rosenberg, whose life was taken by brain cancer in December 2017.
